What's The Worst Thing That Could Happen At My Liposuction?

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans undergo liposuction (also referred to as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy)

. A number of other areas of the world demonstrate similarly impressive popularity rates. This procedure is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries of all time. However, even though the surgery is extremely popular, a lot of people still have questions and concerns about it.

One common question that people think, even if it's slightly more rarely verbalized is: "What's the worst thing that could happen?" "In a worst case scenario, what could happen during this surgery?"

The most literal answer to this question is fairly obvious. In the very worst of all cases, a lipoplasty can result in death. A couple of well-publicized cases have brought this to the fore. However, regardless of media hype, the actual occurrence of death is really rather rare. One set of statistics suggests that a lipoplasty induced death occurs in roughly 1 out of every 50,000 surgeries.

A slightly less dramatic worst case scenario is the potential for serious injury. As with any surgery, there is the chance for complications and injuries. A doctor can make a mistake during the fat removal and accidentally puncture an organ or body cavity with the cannula (the thin, hollow needle used to suction fat from the body). There can be complications arising from the anesthetic used. In some procedures, there is the possibility for burns due to the type of equipment used. There can be nerve damage, skin or tissue death, or other problems. These complications can often be kept from getting out of hand as long as the doctor is made aware of the issue promptly.

A less serious set of complications involves unpleasing results. Sometimes a surgery is performed in which there are no injuries caused but in which the patient simply doesn't like the way he or she looks after the surgery. Sometimes a doctor will take too much fat out, leaving an unnatural, un-streamlined appearance. Sometimes the fat removal patterns leads to a strange wavy appearance in the skin. Sometimes the skin takes on a darker or lighter hue, and sometimes there is some amount of scarring. This is the most common type of liposuction problem.

People can reduce the likelihood of all of these types of problems and complications by choosing a skillful and experienced surgeon. Although the chances of negative results or complications can never be entirely eliminated, having a good surgeon can help significantly.
