What's With This Sardine Malarkey?

You hear many things about sardines, some are never the same and others are one common

one is to do with the small fish that goes by the name of Sardine or should I say its not just a fish. It all boils down to the fact that Sardines aren't a species of fish, yes that's right there is no such fish that is a sardine. You see the term Sardine actually means the variety of small fish that are of various species not just one that have been processed and canned. The name Sardine actually was derived from the Mediterranean Italian island that is called Sardinia. But what also adds to the confusion is that you can't find the variety of Sardine species around this island any more but in the past you could find them in abundance. So no you won't exactly find locals in their Sardinia villas going to a nearby river and fishing for lunch and dinner.

You also have to add to the fact that the term Sardine varies from region to region for example in Denmark and Norway they are brisling and slids. Whilst in Britain the Sea Fish Industry Authority classify sardines as young pilchards also the criteria for it to be considered a sardine is that it has to be no longer than 6 inches, whilst those that are larger are caller pilchards. The Food and Agriculture Organization have classed 21 one different species as sardines in their Codex.

The term is also used in a children's game which is similar to hide and seek, where the children will hide and then it is up one of the children whom is chosen to find then and when they do they pack them into a space until there is only one left, who becomes the next one to hide this game is called the stinky sardine club.
