Wheelchair Accessories Make Wheelchair Transport Easier
A wheelchair may not always be an entity unto itself
. More often than not, wheelchair accessories are necessary to the effective functioning of the unit, or at least of those persons utilizing it as a means of transport.
Not all wheelchairs require anything but the chair, occupant and attendant. These are the units used to help a healed patient exit the hospital or the person who is generally healthy, but cannot easily walk the length of several airport terminals and make the trip in comfort and their flight on time. However, even in the case of a simple transport chair, there is often a requirement for more than just wheels and a place to sit.
This is because, quite frequently, persons with mobility issues have other attendant health issues and, for example, require a place to put their oxygen tanks. If they are in a hospital, the difficulty in moving under their own power may be due not so much to physical infirmity, but to an IV tube or other item temporarily attached to their body. A transport chair that can be accessorized to accommodate an oxygen tank, IV stand, or both, will make the journey much easier on both passenger and attendant.
There are other things that can be used to facilitate ease of use on the part of occupant and attendant. Many standard wheelchairs in use today do not actually have anywhere to put stuff. Certainly students have for decades been hanging their backpacks off the handles like they would their shoulders, but this trick doesn't work as well for a carry-on bag, purse, and Chihuahua carrier.
Wheelchair accessories such as a carrying rack underneath that accommodates at least some of these will make the trip through the airport that much more pleasant, not to mention saving the attendant from having to manage a chair and a luggage carrier.
There are also many parts of the world where no sane person goes outside without an umbrella, even if the sun happens to be shining at any given moment. As convenient as they are during a downpour, umbrellas can be complicated indoors, especially if your transport chair lacks an umbrella stand.
There are other items that should be available with any standard wheelchair and almost never are. Consider the advantages of a seatbelt when transporting someone from place to place, especially one for children, who are very much prone to squirming out of any place. Increased occupant safety leads to reduced institutional liability, which means everyone wins.
Wheelchair accessories need not be isolated to those things that make them easier to use and maneuver. When you are considering the purchase of any form of transport chair for institutional use, consider the theft-reduction possibilities offered an alternative chair that not only provides the wheelchair accessories listed above, that not only can be nested and secured in a coin-return fashion, but can be equipped with name plates and inscribed serial numbers.
These chairs are harder to steal than standard chairs at the outset, as they cannot be folded up and placed in a car, nor moved by the occupants. Supplementing these features with an identifying nameplate, makes them not only extremely inconvenient to steal, but also fairly pointless.
