Airports have come a great distance with their transportation systems
. Now almost all major airports have accommodations for disabled passengers. This usually means having wheelchair operations so disabled passengers can move around the airport and get to their plane.
Even though advancements have been made in airports there are still some issues involved. A lot of chairs in airports are broken or worn down, which make it uncomfortable for disabled people to sit in. There is also an issue of new chairs being stolen by the passengers.
Another major problem today is that airport administrators have had to make major price cuts. That means they are resolving to use wheelchairs that are cheaper quality. This means less durable chairs that typically last only a year or two before they need to be replaced.
Airports offer a lot of good solutions to these types of problems. The main answer that some airports have started doing is stop buying vinyl or chrome chairs that wear out easily and replacing them with more durable, steel-framed chairs. These are good too because they offer wider seats for larger passengers.
Airports have tried to deal with stolen wheelchair issues. The reason the chairs are so easy to steal is because most airport chairs are the standard chairs, with generic appearance. It is as simple as folding up the chair and stowing it in their car's trunk.
Because of this airports are starting to have more distinctive designs and colors to identify them. This will separate the airport chairs and the passenger chairs. There are even automatic brake systems that are sometimes used with the chairs to prevent passengers from going past certain points of the airport with out the assistance of an airport attendant.
Airports have had an issue in the past with space issues. Wheelchairs take up a lot of space, even when they are folding up and stored that way. To avoid having a shortage of chairs due to the space issue, many airports now have coin-operated areas where they store and return rented chairs.
The "Americans With Disabilities Act" has influenced every advance that has happened with the airports. Airports have definitely come a long way. Now these advances allow disabled individuals the chance to be transported around the airport in a safe and secure way.
