Wheelchair Vehicles Provide Freedom for the Whole Family
Wheelchair Vehicles Provide Freedom for the Whole Family
Being dependent on a wheelchair is not only hard on the wheelchair dependent person, but also on the loved ones. It's difficult to care for a child, parent, sibling, or other loved one who is dependent on a wheelchair, in addition to the concern for his or her well-being when their freedom and independence are restricted. Fortunately, there are numerous types of wheelchair vehicles that can improve at least one dimension of life.
These vehicles offer several functional, practical, and comfort features for completing the normal activities of everyday life. However, it will generally mean a van or some other vehicle large enough to accommodate a wheelchair and lift or ramp. But you don't have to feel like a dud, instead opt for one of the sportier minivans and be a dude.
Today a popular choice for wheelchair vehicles is the minivan. They are easy to maneuver, offer plenty of interior space, are affordable, and have a sportier exterior than full-sized vans. In addition, many models have floor storage which makes a great place to store a ramp out of the way. Modified minivans lower the floor allowing the driver to remain in the wheelchair when driving. Usually the wheelchair enters through the second seat side door, but some models are beginning to allow front entry.
There is also the possibility for rear entry which makes loading and unloading easier at most locations. In this style the wheelchair bound person cannot be the driver; however, it's an excellent option for families with a child in a wheelchair. You may also install lifts into minivans which allow entry from the second seat side or front driver side. Lifts can also be used to stow wheelchairs in the back of minivans, or other wheelchair vehicles.
If a large wheelchair or scooter is utilized, often full-sized vans are necessary if the person is to travel in the wheelchair. These vans have much more head clearance and roomier interiors than the minivan. They can also accommodate driver-side wheelchair use. Any vehicle designed for the wheelchair dependent person to drive will have to be modified for hand controls.
If simply storing the wheelchair is all that is required, boom lifts can be installed in most vehicles or hitch mounted platform lifts can be installed. Wheelchair vehicles of whatever type will improve the daily lives of the wheelchair dependent person and his or her family.
