When A Morning Suit Is Worn

Morning dress is a form of formal suit which consists of a tailcoat

, a waistcoat and striped trousers. Nowadays it is usually worn at weddings by the wedding party only. Occasionally, it is seen at royal occasions in the UK or at special race days, such as Ascot. It is also the uniform of Eton school. However, everyone associates the morning suit mostly with weddings, which is by far the most common occasion for it to be worn.

Morning dress was first worn by gentlemen for riding. Most took their rides in the morning, hence the name. The jacket was a traditional tail coat with the front of the tails cut away, so that the gentleman could ride without creasing his coat. By Edwardian times wearing morning dress throughout most of the day became acceptable for the upper classes.

It is important not to wear morning dress at the wrong time of the day. In most places men can only wear it if the event that they are going to attend starts prior to 7pm, in other places the time limit is 5pm. After these times formal dress is white tie, which is a suit with the same cut as morning dress, but all in white.

The tradition of the groom and his wedding party wearing a morning suit is still very popular in the UK and to some extent in Australia and New Zealand. If the groom chooses to wear a lounge suit instead then the rest of the wedding party should wear lounge suits too. Most grooms now have their morning suit made for them. Once they have tried a few off the peg versions on, they soon realise that it is hard to get a morning suit to look perfect without the help of a good tailor.

Morning dress is very rarely worn in the US, not even for weddings. One notable exception was when Ronald Regan wore a morning coat for his presidential swearing-in. The United States Solicitor General or his deputies also wear morning wear during oral arguments before the Supreme Court.

The shirt worn with a morning suit is special too. It is normally, but not always, white. The collar is a turn-down collar, which is usually detachable. When a wing collar is worn a Ascot tie is worn instead of a standard tie. An Ascot tie is so named because it was first worn at Ascot races. The Ascot tie is similar to a cravat, and is held together with a special tie pin. If a tie is worn with it then the shirt has to have double cuffs too. Shoes are black and are usually Oxford shoes or dress boots.
