What do you do when one of your best racing pigeons does not make it to the loft after a race

? Here are four important questions you should answer:

1) How long was the bird away before somebody observed it? This will give you some indication of the condition of your entire bird. If it was lost for quite a while, chances are it is injured or sick.2) How far from home was the bird when observed? If it's not far, you should go and pick up the bird. Making that effort will allow the person who found the bird know that you care about your birds. It will reflect well on all pigeon fanciers.. Be prepared for the bird to be in bad shape, however. If it got nearly home but not all of the way, there's possibly something wrong.

3) Did the finder just pick up the bird, or did he need to catch it? It's not easy to catch a pigeon in good health. If the person just picked the bird up it probably has an injury.

4) Is the finder knowledgeable about pigeons? If the finder does not know very much about pigeons and just picked it up, he likely thinks it is a pet bird. Most people do not know a healthy pigeon would have escaped and been hard to catch.

Some other factors to consider are the length of the race, how far had the pigeon flown already and how far from home is it. Do not ever advise a finder to let the bird go. It makes you appear like you don't care about your bird. Either go and get the bird or inform the finder he may keep it. If he can't keep it, find yet another pigeon fancier in the region and ask them pick it up. They could possibly give it a new home or work out a way to send it back to you.
