When A Woman Changes Due To Antarctica
Traveling to Antarctica on two separate occasions was a woman who has always said
that she did not prefer to be exposed to cold weather making her the least favorable candidate for this kind of voyage.
A way to return to the area is what the woman desires. This lady was knowledgeable of how the continent is the coldest ever.
Considering how a limited group of people were able to have such an experience this motivated her to agree to it.
The job she had in 1988 was as a member of a support crew working at McMurdo Station on the Ross Ice Shelf which was 825 miles from the South Pole for scientists.
Today, her job as a general field assistant is familiarly known as that of a go for. A source given to her was Survival in Antarctica by the National Science Foundation which she needed to read beforehand.
Other requirements include immunizations and an extensive physical exam. The reason being there are no hospitals, no emergency rooms, nothing like that.
When it comes to medical assistance, the way to be given the treatment you need involves a helicopter flying you out of the area and this can cost the government a lot of money not to mention cause harm to other people.
An outdoor survival school was to be attended after she arrived in Antarctica. What she will be taught includes spotting a crevasse field and making a sleeping shelter for when she finds herself far from the base.
They had a bathroom with four lavatories and two showers led to a location from the tent by a covered walkway.
On the bathroom door was a sign stating how showers per week should only be two minutes long. Flushing is only done when necessary.
No new notices means this rule applies. This is to reserve water for any occurrence of fires on that station.
Mostly at the water plant, they faced a lot of mechanical problems because equipment was continuously used in sub zero temperatures.
Necessary are water reserves for this predicament. Water supplies are allocated for usage in cooking as well as for drinking.
Water allotments though were limited when it comes to flushing, showering, or doing the laundry.
In addition, they could not easily call their relatives back home. Waiting for a phone call is necessary so you need to put yourself on a waiting list until the weather clears up and your call comes through.
Communication is assisted by ham radio operators.
She says of all the inconveniences and difficulties of life on the station, dealing with the cold was the hardest and cold it did get.
A recorded temperature of 32 degrees happened during the summer running from October through December.
Changes in temperature happened around January. Everything from wind chills to temperature changes were in her diaries.
Sometimes weather in Antarctica dictates that workers only travel in pairs. There are times when weather affects outdoor travel.
Intense weather conditions can strictly forbid this. Much was discovered about herself from the isolation.
Basically, she changed. No insecurities were part of her attitude before going to Antarctica.
Now she knows that there are a lot of things that are out of her control. You could say that she is more relaxed now.
Out of the ordinary is what the continent is. Astounding is the ability to be with a limited few in a place where no one has ever dared to be in to before.
Probably all locations have been seen by someone. Rivers, the timber, and mountains have no escape when it comes to man.
