When And Why To Get Oil Changes

There are fluids in your car that need to be changed more often than others

. One fluid is the oil. The oil needs to be changed regularly because it has such close contact with the pistons and all of the moving parts within the engine that can get dirty. Heat from the engine will also cause it to get dirty, so it makes sense that the more you drive, the more often you should have your oil changed. At what intervals should you have the oil changed? What happens if you do not get your oil changed in that amount of time?

Keep the Engine Clean

If you do not get your oil changed as recommended, you run several risks to your engine. The first risk is that the dirt in the oil will drop out through parts of your engine, causing a buildup that can cause damage later on. The deposits are not meant for or are supposed to be in the engine, as they can cause problems with gaskets, switches, and other parts that need to be open and remain clog free.

Another problem with not getting the oil changed when recommended is that it can slowly leak out of the system. When oil leaks and there is not enough inside the engine to provide lubrication, bad things can happen. An engine without oil as a lubricant can overheat, lock up, and just plain old fail to run until oil is added into it.

Change The Oil After Heavy Driving

For people who drive a lot each day, the oil can get a heavier workout without going a lot of miles. If you sit in a traffic jam for two hours, your car's engine is still running even if it is in idle. You can turn your car off if you know you will be sitting, but most traffic jams move at a snail's pace for a long period and never sit still long enough to shut the engine off. The stop and go driving through town is also just as hard on an engine and it's even harder because the braking action makes the pistons stop and go a lot more, and then they don't run at a consistent rate. For people who do a lot of heavy driving daily to work, most manufacturer's would recommend no more than 3,000 miles between oil changes.

Change The Oil Before a Long Trip

When you and the family are headed out for a long road trip for a summer vacation, it might not exactly be the time for an oil change. However, just by estimating the mileage, you can probably tell that you should be scheduled for one before you come home. Instead of driving to your location and having to worry about someone to do the maintenance on your car, have it done at your regular place. Get the oil changed by someone you trust so that you aren't trying to find a trustworthy establishment. Plus, you don't want to spend your vacation time doing work.

Get the oil changed before you leave and then you know it will be one less thing to worry about when you are gone or as soon as you get back. Having the oil changed more frequently is better than not having it changed often enough. Clean oil will mean that you will have a clean engine.
