When Colors Express Emotions

With years of experience come several rules when it comes to hanging pictures

. If a wall appears empty without a picture then this is when you should hang one up and never should you hang pictures on every wall you see unless you've always yearned to live in an art gallery. When it comes to pictures you could hang them in groups, over a console table, a server, a sofa, or a small pier table.

There is a second rule. Groupings should never be done wider than the furniture underneath. If you want to give a unified look to a wall, hang the pictures close together, especially if they're of varying sizes. For instance, let's say you have a prized collection of bird prints in frames of varying sizes and types. Hang them close together in pleasing geometrics not frame against frame, however.

This is not the end of the rules. May pictures be hung in close proximity the wall is a frame in itself which serves to set off a group of pictures on all four sides. Considering pleasing geometry this simply means that pictures are hung in the formation of a square or a rectangle. If not on a staircase then the step pattern in hanging pictures should not be used. As often as possible you should go for straight lines that meet at right angles. Every now and then a little regimentation works better.

Take into consideration a possible collection of pictures accumulated over time including old family portraits, originals, prints, and reproductions.
