When Did You Last Cheat On Your Lover?

Men and women do look at cheating differently. When my friend cheated on her boyfriend over New Year's Eve with the boy next door, everyone in both households knew it (and we are big houses with a dozen people between us). Naturally, everyone, in their own time, came up with their own experience or views of cheating. We had opened a Pandora's box. Interestingly, the reactions were so different. There's the woman who says she never masturbates. Because, she says, when she's not got a regular man around, she just finds temporary ones, and has sex. Now she's been seeing this guy for a while. So, she says, she could never do that to her guy because it would hurt him too much. However, she quickly adds, if she, like me, had not had sex for six months, it might be different. The man thinks different. He shares a room with my housemate and they've been together for nine months or so. He's already cheated on her, and this, he tells me, a couple of nights back. I am not surprised; he's a healthy, hearty young man and temptation abounds. He thinks I knew about it; the girl he did it with is also a friend. Suddenly we are talking straight, both being people who have faulted on their commitments to others, both being people who had strongly believed in these commitments and responsibilities. The general feeling of other women and men in the houses lies somewhere between these reactions. So I think, these are two different reactions: the women feel guilt and the men a sense of camaraderie. The women because they demand the faultless adherence to an idealistic notion, and the men because they know it is only human to make mistakes, but are willing to cover up to prevent further problems. It is like aspiring to an ideal versus accepting that it is an ideal not reality. My take is that six months is the top I have gone without sex. If my commitment to a monogamous relationship is to be tested nature will probably present a situation where I may have to go a year without sex. I am willing to live with that. For I know that to be faithful you need to have self control, you have to prevent yourself from getting into situations that are troublesome. If I am not willing to do that right now, the karma will come around. I can take that. But if I make mistakes, that too is alright. Because I am only human. No guilt for me, baby!
