Liftgates are a piece of equipment that people who are shipping heavier cargo with

Liftgates aren't something that's required to go with every shipment, and the need for one is going to be determined by the weight of the shipment, and by the pickup and drop off available facilities. If all you are shipping is documents or packages that weigh under 100lbs, then you're never going to have to worry about having to rent this piece of equipment to go with your shipment.

Liftgates are how cargo that weighs over 100lbs is loaded from the ground to the level of the truck, and vice versa. They are a lift that attaches to the rear of the truck to raise and lower cargo from truck level. They are required anytime cargo that weighs more than 100lbs is needed to be loaded into or out of a truck. Courier companies have rules that prohibit their employees from trying to lift cargo of over that weight in and out of trucks without a liftgate, as the probability of injury to one of their people is simply too high.

When you are initially setting up your request for shipping with your courier company, they are going to ask you about the weight of your shipment. If you tell them that the cargo is going to weigh over 100lbs, the next question that they are probably going to ask you is whether or not your warehouse is equipped with a loading dock.

This is because the presence of loading docks is the single loophole out of the requirement of renting a liftgate. When you have bays that trucks can back into putting the truck and the warehouse floor at the same level, you no longer require a liftgate for the movement of the goods in and out of the truck. Besides just saving you money on the liftgate rental, this is also a much more time efficient method of loading and unloading trucks. This is exactly why most of the larger businesses with their own warehouses have loading docks.

Of course, if you want to avoid the rental of a liftgate altogether, then the company that you are making the delivery to is also going to have to be equipped with a loading dock as well. Many large businesses do have loading docks, often providing the opportunity for this savings.
