When Do You Need Transmission Repair?
Transmission repair is something most car owners dread because it is expensive and it could take awhile to get it fixed
. But exactly why is transmission repair so tasking for auto repair shops?
In order to understand why transmission repairs cost as much as they do, and why repairing it takes as long as it does, we need to first know how it works.
Cars need transmissions because of the physics of the gasoline engine. First, all engines have a redlinethe maximum rpm value above which the engine cannot go without exploding. Second, engines have narrow rpm ranges where horsepower and torque are at their maximum. For example, an engine might produce its maximum horsepower at 5,500 rpm. The transmission allows the gear ratio between the engine and the drive wheels to change as the car speeds up and slows down. You shift gears so the engine can stay below the redline and near the rpm band of its best performance.
Since the transmission does so much work in making the vehicle move smoothly from point A to point B, it does get prone to damage, especially if the driver is not so well equipped in handling stick shift. The most common trouble encountered with the transmission is when it gets stuck. Auto repair shops say this is commonly caused by worn parts. Transmission repair requires shift linkage adjustment or replacement.
Transmission repair is also required when the transmission slips between gears: This is most often caused by an internal problem in the transmission, which will need to be replaced or rebuilt. It may also be caused by problems with the computer or a sensor or the linkages. Auto repair shops say this type of repair can set you back fro $120-$380, depending on the part to be replaced.
A noisy transmission engine is also a common problem. Common noises are buzzes, clicks or clunks. These indicate internal problems, and the transmission will likely have to be rebuilt or replaced.
Pan leaks are another set of problems. A transmission can leak in several different places. If the pan on the bottom of the transmission is leaking, it is a simple matter of replacing a gasket. If the pan has become warped, you need to replace the pan and the gasket. This could mean leaving your vehicle in the auto repair shop for a day or two. If the front seal is leaking, the transmission repair staff will need to remove the whole thing from the vehicle. This seal is often called the front pump seal. When this leaks, you will notice transmission fluid dripping between the transmission and the engine. Auto repair vendors say the parts are not expensive, but the actual job is very labor intensive, as the transmission must be separated from the engine to replace the front pump seal. In this case, you should have the mechanic check the clutch and the rear main seal on the engine. The cost of this transmission repair service isn't too high, and you'll save the cost of having the transmission removed again should these parts fail.
A leak in the tail shop is a big problem for most auto repair shops. There is a seal in the tail shaft housing where the driveshaft enters the transmission. This is an inexpensive part and repair on rear-wheel-drive vehicles. In front-wheel-drive vehicles, there is no tail shaft housing seal. Instead, you have two axle seals, one on each side of the transmission. Because the axles must be removed, this repair is a bit more expensive than replacing a tail shaft housing seal.
