Anyone that is a frequent traveler for business or pleasure is used to the experience

of landing in a major international airport and finding their way to their hotel or resort quickly. However, someone that isn't as used to this experience might have many questions. If you're not sure how taxi services in these large centers work, you might not know when you should call for a pickup.

How long you want to wait before calling a cab will depend on a few things. If you're in a hurry to get picked up right away, then you should call as soon as you can turn your phone back on if all you have is carryon luggage. That means you'll have no wait time and are ready to go, and should just call the cab as soon as you can.

This doesn't apply if you've flown in on an international flight. Even with just carryon luggage you'll have to clear customs on your way in, which can delay you somewhat. If you are waiting for luggage, you could call a cab once you see that other passengers from your flight are beginning to receive their luggage, as it probably won't take much more time for your own bags to arrive.

There are other options as well. Most major airports in large cities maintain a full time taxi stand out the front doors of any terminal. This can be a somewhat cutthroat environment with everyone trying to get the first cab up, but there is often a steady stream of cars arriving. With just a little patience, you can usually snag a car to take you where you need to go.

If you're arriving into town on a business schedule and are heading right to a meeting, you could arrange to have a car waiting for you instead. Because this will cost them money if you are delayed, this option often costs more. This isn't too big of a problem for high powered business travelers, but is less often considered by everyday travelers.

In any case, a good rule is to know that the larger the airport you are flying into, the more fully the terminals will be serviced by the transit companies, including taxis. If you're flying into a small center, the city may have only limited cabs available which may only come when called, but in a large center there is usually a car only a short distance away.
