When Is It Ever Ethical To Be Dishonest?

We must become the change we want to see in the world

. Quote by Mahatma Gandhi

Is it ever ethical to be dishonest? The answer is, Never. Dishonesty is a behavior that is harmful and takes you away from what you desire. For example, expecting to be paid for service or work that has not been performed is dishonest. In the short term you may benefit by getting something for nothing. However, in the long run this behavior tends to destroy your reputation and trustworthiness.

Behavior that is untruthful and insincere may come back to haunt you. What are some of the causes and types of unethical behavior? They may fall into two main categories. When you find yourself doing any one of the two, check your behavior.

1. A desire for self-gratification is the first.

This includes an unhealthy desire for things that make you feel good, yet, are not always good for your health and well-being. Harmful behavior in this category involves, overeating, taking drugs, inactivity from watching too much television, and displaying a tendency to hold a grudge. Displaying an unforgiving nature, to yourself or others, for any preconceived wrong act sets up a negative chain reaction within your body.

2. Self-protection is the second.

When you find yourself doing something that protects you from distressing pain, there is a tendency to control it so it will not happen again. Building walls around your feelings to keep others from hurting you, is an unhealthy behavior. When you have been hurt, express your feelings. Be willing to express love openly and to receive the same in return.

Also, a lack of self-esteem may cause you to behave unethically. If you are insecure and anxious about how future events will turn out, low self-esteem may be the problem. To build your self-esteem, expand your awareness of what you feel at any given moment; think how good it feels when you achieve and reach your goals.

Additional dishonorable behaviors may include,

(a) an obsessive desire to buy and accumulate unnecessary possessions to show your superiority,

(b) hoarding,

(c) selfishness and an unwillingness to share,

(d) cutthroat competitiveness, and

(e) winning for the wrong reasons.

Instead, whether you are in a full-time career, or operating a small business, make it a habit to give value for value. Give quality service in return for your pay. Put value and honesty ahead of your profit or gain, or a quest for attention. Give more than you expect in return. Your personal and professional satisfaction lasts much longer.

Developing a desire to be honest represents the best in ethical behavior. Get rid of self-defeating habits and negative attitudes. Choose to be confident. Confidence with passion builds your self-esteem. That way you will never feel the need to react with unpleasant behavior.

Find other ways to build your self-esteem. Try thinking outside your normal way of doing, acting, and being. As learning tools, add a little encouragement, inspiration, and constructive action to your behavior patterns. Then you will find it unnecessary to use any unethical or dishonest behavior styles to accomplish your goals.
