When It Is Time To Call 911
Many people call 911 each and every year but more times than not these calls wind up to be things that are not medical emergencies
. In the current economic climate most of the emergency services have been significantly cut back and as a result anyone with a non-medical emergency should really call their local hospital or make arrangements to get to the emergency room or doctor's office. Anything which can wait should actually be placed on hold until the next day that office hours are available. So what falls into the category of a medical emergency? This is a general rule of thumb, anything that could cause immediate death or permanent damage should be considered a 911 emergency. This would include loss of consciousness, chest pains, stroke symptoms, profuse bleeding that is uncontrolled, loss of a limb, an individual who is unable to be transported by a friend or neighbor, and the inability to breathe freely.
On the other hand a fever, even one that is very high is not a 911 emergency. An asthma attack isn't typically a 911 emergency although in severe cases maybe. Cold symptoms, vomiting, dehydration, broken bones, and even head trauma are usually things that can sustain a car ride to the emergency room and therefore 911 should not be called. Most hospitals have an emergency line that you can call if you're unable to determine the best course of action for the symptoms you have.
It is also important to be sure that you realize those things which could wait until morning because a trip to the regular doctor's office is usually much less costly. These include any cold, flu, or other illness that has not become life threatening with the exception of when it comes to people who are in severe health crisis already.
When it comes to 911 many areas are also charging fees that include an ambulance charge and many health insurance companies won't pick up the tab for emergency transport for those who are not in critical condition. Also, it is not advisable to use 911 simply because you don't have health insurance coverage. You would be better suited to find an emergency clinic in your area that will offer you a discounted fee on all services whenever possible.
Remember there are individuals who really need 911 services at specific times. Therefore it is essential to make sure that you really have a medical emergency before you call.
