When Should One Wear a Mouth Guard?
We always see athletes wear mouth guards or mouth pieces to protect their teeth from excessive trauma during intensive physical activities. Take boxing or mixed martial arts for example; boxers or martial artists get hit in the face during bouts and lack of protection can lead to teeth getting knocked out, which isn't really the most agreeable thing in the world. Hence, the use of mouth guards and mouth pieces has become standard requirements prior allowing athletes to compete in their respective crafts.
However, do you know that any ordinary citizen can also be prescribed to wear mouth guards? Even those who are not involved in any physical activity still endure significant physical trauma and left unattended, this can cause damage to one's teeth. Of course, the best way to determine if one indeed requires mouth pieces is to consult your dentist but there are signs that can tell you early on.
The most common sign that one needs a mouth guard is when one unconsciously grinds his teeth. This normally happens during sleep but can also occur while performing other activities such as running, or even while sitting down doing office work. The constant grinding of the teeth against each other wears the tooth crown down and thins the teeth enamel which makes the teeth more susceptible to dental caries.
Excessive mechanical stress on the teeth also injures the gums, which leads to bleeding, and in more advance cases pyorrhea which is an inflammation of the sockets of the teeth usually leading to loosening of the teeth and falling out.
Mouth guards are made of strong, elastic polymers that absorb the force and direct it away from the teeth. There are special designs for every specific need and this is the reason why consultation must be done first before picking a mouth guard. One should fit a specially fitted mouth guard and not some knock-off purchased at the corner store. They can be worn in sleep or while doing activities that cause you to clench your jaw and grind your teeth. It is normally not comfortable to wear these in an office setting and it is not recommended to wear them all day long as long as you are aware of the instances when you grind your teeth or clench your jaw so you can consciously stop yourself from exerting unnecessary force on your gums.
These issues may seem trivial but a good number of people suffer from these problems and neglect oftentimes caused the habit to balloon to something worse.
Do your part today and save your teeth from unnecessary stress. It most certainly needs all the pampering that it can get.
