When Something Is Sent To Me Cod, Can I Refuse It?
There are lots of different ways that you might get a product shipped to you
. Almost all of those except one though, require you to pay for that shipment before it is ever sent. The one time that there is an exception to that rule though is when something is sent COD. If a Miami delivery service sends you something COD for one of their clients, it means that you are expected to pay for that item when it arrives, not before.
COD stands for collect on delivery. That means that instead of paying the business that you are buying something from directly, you are going to pay their courier who will collect on behalf of that business for them. The method of payments that are accepted under COD terms are varied, but usually include good as cash methods such as certified checks or money orders. Credit cards are also sometimes accepted.
There are some laws which apply specifically to those that are shipping COD. When something is shipped on this basis, the customer that receives the shipment has the legal right to refuse any shipment. This is to protect consumers from fraudulent shipping orders which could otherwise place an obligation on them to pay for products which may have been misrepresented by the seller.
It is important to realize that the right to refuse a COD shipment is something that is in place as a consumer protection measure. It is not there to allow people to window shop and return products at their leisure, unless the company selling the products specifically says that you are invited to order to view the products before you pay for them.
The law is there in order to protect customers. For example, if a company ships something that when it arrives in no way resembles the order that you thought that you were paying for; you should refuse to pay for the shipment. You could also go that route if your order showed up and you found that your products were damaged. Be sure to use your good sense and logic if you decide to refuse a shipment. COD shipping has become more and more uncommon as companies have had to incur many heavy shipping costs from customers fraudulently refusing orders. If we want to continue to enjoy that shipping option we need to make sure to only responsibly refuse any shipments which are sent to us.
