When To Call A Plumber
Does this sound like something thats happened to you
? You go to flush the toilet, and it wont flush. I pushed the handle and the valve opens , but the water just whirls around and the water level gets gravely close to running over. Instantly you use the plunger, but it doesnt work at all . My first thought is that one of the children has tried to flush too down too much toilet paper, but usually working the plunger a couple of times gets rid of the problem . In this instance, the stoppage cant budge.
Since I do any repairs around the house, my fundamental reaction is to bring in my auger tool and snake out the drains, but because Im not a qualified professional plumbing technician , a large percentage of times , that ends up in a failure . I end up tired, sore and slimy and the pipe continues to be stopped up . I primarily obtained the heavyweight auger to avoid having to get a plumber to come out. The auger came with no directions ; save for generic on/off and safety instructions, so all I succeeded in doing was bending the heck out of the snake. The auger now only works on close up obstructions . If the blockage in the drain pipe is more than around 10 feet in, forget about it. Anyhow, this seemed to be one of those times where I considered grabbing the auger and routing out the sewer by myself . Our house is constructed to include two bathrooms, set up to share a wall . The bathroom toilets are really only separated by a single wall. Considering this, I decided to see what the other toilet was doing. When I entered the second bathroom , I instantly recognized that its bowls water level was extremely low . Interesting. Im a reasonably curious guy , so my instinct was to try that toilet to gauge the consequences. Because the two toilets are so close together , I suspect that their plumbing is shared. Well, I can tell you, the reaction was definitely not what I envisioned . Upon flushing the toilet in the front bathroom, the water backed up into the shower. Backed up in the shower! I didnt think that was even possible . But, what I learned from that little experiment, was that the clog was down the pipe further than my auger( in its broken condition ) would go and that it was in all probability time to hire an experienced plumbing contractor .
Before making that phone call however, I decided to give a bottle of Liquid Plumber a try. We got a one gallon container and I poured about half of it down the shower drain pipe and let it stay in there over night. Directions? I dont need to follow the directions.. When we got up in the morning, we took showers and the water backed up a bit. Not to a point of unusable, but the clog was still there somewhere. That night I poured the remainder of the bottle into the shower drain opening as well, and once again , let it sit overnight . The shower drain ran relatively swiftly the next morning, but in order to make sure, we sent for a professional . We called a plumber. He arrived , worked his snake through the back bathroom toilet and then through the shower drain as well, just to double check. He explained to us that the drain blockage was presumably positioned down in the main sewer line, and thats the reason why the toilet seemed to back up into the shower. The professional plumber did his job , the sewer pipes are now open and the bathroom toilets are each flushing just dandy . I guess the logical reason for this story is that you should call a plumber in the first place and let a qualified professional handle the problem.
After everything, we probably dodged a bullet . The plumber explained that in some cases similar to ours , tree roots will have violated the drain pipe resulting the backup. When this occurs, then particular drain cleaning equipment is necessary to blast out the encroaching roots and rout out the drain pipe . Unfortunately, you never can honestly understand what the problem is, till a experienced plumber puts his snake down the drain. If the regular equipment cant bore through the normal clogs of grease and hair out, then tree roots are presumably your problem.
