When To Replace Your Down Pillow
A down pillow is considered the best natural choice in bedding due to its softness. Down pillows like any other type of bedding need to be replaced when the filling can no longer offer the resistance needed for a proper night's sleep. However don't assume it is time to throw out a down pillow yet as you may be able to keep and repair a down pillow to its former lofty goodness.
Down pillows contain 75% or more down clusters as part of their weight based on Federal Trade Commission standards. The other 25% of the pillow uses either more down, small feathers or fiber (fiber is the broken off pieces of down clusters). Overtime the average bed pillow gets used several hours a night under heat, moisture and compression from someone sleeping on and with it. This excess pressure can cause the down filling to get weighed down and loose its fill power. This repeated sleep pressure process also can damage down clusters over time.
There are a number of things that can be down to help rejuvenate a down pillow including using pillow protectors, regular washing and dryings and pillow rotation. A pillow protector usually has a zipper and simply is placed over your bed pillow. The pillow protector should have the same measurement as the bed pillow. For example a jumbo down pillow should be covered with a jumbo pillow protector (a jumbo pillow measures 20 x 28 inches). When it comes time to wash a pillow you simply remove the zippered pillow protector and throw it in the wash. The pillow protector's main job is to keep the outside of the pillow in better condition.
Most consumers never wash their pillow and especially their down pillows. This is usually out of the fear that the pillow will feel different then the consumer remembers or they perceive you cannot wash a down pillow. In reality you can wash a down pillow at home with ease. The trick to washing a down pillow is that you have to dry the down pillow for at least two cycles and possibly three drying cycles. The small feathers that might be contained in a down pillow have quills that can trap moisture and you will want to remove all moisture.
In fact one of the best things you can do to renew a down pillow is to throw it in the dryer every month for a 20 minute dry cycle. This helps to remove moisture and also keeps the down extra fluffy. This at home drying process also has the advantage of removing moisture inside the filling and kills bacteria on and in the pillow built up over repeated use.
If you always sleep on the same side of your down pillow you may want to rotate it to keep the filling in equal shape. Just like you can flip or rotate a mattress you should flip or rotate a down pillow. This process will help keep the pillow in equal condition on all sides of the pillow and can help extend the life hood of one.
