Many roofing contractors will use heavy duty tarps on the ground before tearing the shingles off of a roof. While the roofing shingles are being removed off the roof they land on the tarps that were placed below. The reason for this is to keep nails and debris off of the grass or other surfaces.
All that is needed next is to pick up the tarps and dump them in the dumpster. This leaves very little mess on the ground. Painters will often use tarps to cover a carpet or wood floor. The reason for this tarp is to keep the paint off of anything you do not want paint on.
