When You Shouldn't Choose Solid Colours For Your Modular Sofa?

Do you prefer patterned or plain sofas? I guess there can be arguments for either choice

. A pattern draws attention to itself, particularly if large or bold, and therefore considerable thought is needed regarding other fabrics in the room if they are not to compete.

However, if you choose a solid colour sofa, you surely won't regret it. Not only will it not date as easily as a large floral design, but it gives you so much more freedom in choosing other colours and fabrics to co-ordinate.

Some interior designers would suggest using a patterned sofa with two or three prominent colours and using that for inspiration. This means that other fabrics in the room have to tie in with this combination, which can be somewhat limiting.

Selecting a neutral colour for your sofa opens up a world of possibilities. You may like the calm restful atmosphere that can be achieved with a neutral coloured sofa set against a neutral background that tones in. Alternatively, a sofa in a more assertive colour can be the centrepiece of a more lush room setting. Bold colours like dark red, purple, or chartreuse can look great on sofas with simple shapes. However you will need to think about other colours in the room such as drapes and additional furnishings.

A modular sofa is usually fairly easy to recover, should you wish to change the look of your room after a few years. You can get loose covers or slip-over covers at reasonable cost in a variety of materials.

Another idea that works well is a striped patter, interesting enough to catch the eye, but also able to be mixed with other pieces of furniture, whether plain or patterned. The regency stripe is timeless on traditional furniture, but there are many contemporary designs that will suit any type of sofa.

Adding in a rug with your sofa often adds to the feeling of comfort. You can keep the rug neutral to blend with the sofa if it is neutral, adding colour or pattern with cushions, or you can go for a livelier look by using a colourful rug. Keeping your sofa neutral allows you to mix and match these other elements, and means that if you move house you won't have to discard your sofa. It can be moved to a different setting with ease.

There is also the choice of a textured fabric on a sofa, which can give a warmer, less stark feel than a plain fabric. Also, you may well notice wear on a smooth fabric before a textured one, making the latter a more practical choice. Popular textured fabrics are chenille, velvet (synthetic for low maintenance), micro-fibre, and boucle. There are designs featuring ingrained textured patterns that look wonderful on a plain sofa of the right colour.

You certainly don't need to settle for plain cotton covering for your sofa as there are lots of interesting alternatives. You might consider corduroy, suede or suede effect, leather or faux leather. These come in a range of colours and finishes and can be very hard wearing. They can make an ideal choice for the busy person.
