When finding a printer which may be used with compatible cartridges

When finding a printer which may be used with compatible cartridges

When looking for ways to save money on the overall cost of office or home printing, there are a few factors to think of, including restricting your printing to using black ink cartridges.

Prior to the actual purchase of the printer, it may be a good idea to check to see whether compatible cartridges can be used with it and not only the "genuine" printer ink cartridges which have been designed specifically for that particular printer. The printer may have been cheap, but expensive printer ink can make the process far more expensive in the long term.

In the UK, 50 million printer ink cartridges are disposed of in landfills every year, adding to high volume of non degradable or slow degrading waste which is dumped. Printer ink cartridges take over 1,000 years to fully break down, so recycled compatible cartridges (Old printer ink cartridges which have been cleaned out and refilled) are in general a better option, as they have been noted for their ability to work just as efficiently, if not more than their branded counterparts by large companies, who now use them to save both money and the environment. As with all printer ink cartridges, it is a good idea to try to findcompatible cartridges which will be good value for money, as the cheapest option will not necessarily be the best.

When finding a printer which may be used with compatible cartridges, bear in mind that some newer models of printer mat not yet have had compatible cartridges developed for them. Also check that the compatible cartridges you use do not run a risk of causing a malfunction or damage to your printer.

You can also help to keep the cost of printing down by checking the paper yield. This is how many pages per cartridge the printer can produce. Some printer ink cartridges, for example black ink cartridges will sell per volume of ink but they do not tell you on average how many pages you can produce with them.

Also consider how often the printer is used. The less a printer is used, the less it will cost overall. This seems obvious, but unnecessary printing can account for a large amount of ink used without even being considered. Conversely, printers should be used once a week to prevent the ink from drying out.

When buying a colour printer, try to find one with individual ink tanks rather than a single tank for all the colours, meaning that if one of the colours runs out, it can then be replaced. On the whole, black ink cartridges are cheaper than colour cartridges, so if possible, try to print more using black ink cartridges than in colour.
