Where Can You Buy a StarCraft 2 Guide?
There are pros and cons of having a physical guide for a game versus having a digital copy. Here are my opinions on both.
Physical Copy
You can buy a physical copy of a StarCraft 2 strategy guide in any local game store. The physical copy is still wanted today by the customers who enter a brick and mortar store to buy their games. When they want a physical copy of a game rather than a downloaded version, chances are they want a physical copy of a strategy guide to go along with it. Plus it is right there in the store for them to look at and buy on impulse.
Some of the benefits are:
1) You always have it ready when you need it, such as while playing the game. This is a big pro for a lot of gamers because you don't have to alt-tab to see the digital copies.
2) You can read it when you aren't at your computer. A lot of people get a lot of reading done in the bathroom, for instance. The way I see it is anywhere you can read a magazine, you can read a strategy guide.
Downfalls of physical guides:
1) Chances are it is never going to be updated. I can't recall any time I have ever seen a physical strategy guide get updated. The only update type situation I can think of would be the World of Warcraft dungeon guides that they give the information on the new expansions instances.
2) If it gets ruined you have to buy a new one. If your dog chews it up, you spill a drink on it, or you lose it somewhere, it's gone. Then you are out of $20 or more.
Digital Guides
Digital copies of StarCraft 2 guides are quickly gaining popularity. You can buy these straight from the internet and have access to them instantly. I was never really aware of the bonus of digital guides until I bought one. The convenience of it is amazing with today's technology.
Benefits of digital guides:
1) They are constantly updated. Digital guides must be updated when the game changes or people wouldn't buy them. This is by far the biggest advantage that digital guides have over physical ones. When tweaks are made to the game or a new strategy is found, you can bet the guides will change to reflect it.
2) You will always have it. These guides can not be ruined; they will only get better because of updates. You don't have to worry about spilling anything on them.
3) You can print them out to become a physical guide. This almost completely negates the purpose of the physical guides, if you have a printer.
4) You can view these on your smart phones. A lot of people do not want to walk around with big physical guides, if you are using a smart phone, you can just view it discreetly.
Downfalls of digital guides:
1) If you don't have a printer, you can't make it a physical guide. You would either need to alt-tab over to the guide to read it, or have another computer such as a laptop to read it on.
2) Some guides require access to the internet. This is both bad and good. Bad in the fact that if you aren't connected to the internet, you can't read it. Good in the fact that it means it will be automatically updated, you wont have to update yours on your computer.
In my opinion the benefits of having a digital guide versus having a physical guide are much greater. Digital guides can be made into a physical guide with the push of the print button. You don't have to worry about ruining it because you can just print another. The updates are by far the biggest plus for them, since games like StarCraft 2 are forever changing.
