There are growing job opportunities for sonographers in a variety of urban and rural settings. Clinics, hospitals, laboratories, private practice physician offices, public health facilities and other medical or health care facilities all require sonography professionals in order to better serve the public.
There are opportunities for career advancement in the sonography field for educators, administrators, researchers and corporate professionals such as application specialists, education specialists, sales representatives, technical advisors and more. The sky is the limit for professionals in the ultrasound industry. This field has expanded greatly since the technology was first developed in World War II to locate submerged objects. Now sonography is used in pretty much every branch of medicine around the world.
Basically, sonographers use ultrasound technology to examine various parts of the body including the abdomen, blood vessels, breasts, female reproductive system, heart, prostate and others. Many people just think of ultrasounds as tools for viewing the fetus and the womb in a pregnant womans body to determine the health, location, number and sex of the baby or babies, among other things, but this is just one of many uses for this technology. Ultrasound technology can be used to detect gallstones or liver disease in the abdomen, for example. Sonography can be used to detect heart disease or to help take samples of cells from organs to test in the lab, which can help detect conditions such as cancer.
Sonographers using diagnostic ultrasound technology have an important job. They use a noninvasive, radiation-free and safe procedure with no risks such as bleeding, chemical reactions or infections. These medical professionals may specialize in areas such as obstetrics and gynecology or imaging and blood vessel tests, as an example. There are many places they can work and many specializations they can go into. It is a crucial position in any medical or health care facility, and it is a job with a bright future.
