Where Is Annam

Annam is a territory in southeast Asia, on the eastern coast of French Indo-China

. It is a part of the Viet Nam Republic. In size Annam is not much bigger than Iowa or Alabama or North Carolina-it has about 57,000 square miles-but it is a very colorful country. The seven million people who live in Annam are two or three times as many as live in one of these states of the same size. The people of Annam are short and dark, with coarse black hair, small flat noses, and features resembling those of the Chinese.

They are very intelligent and amiable, and have a great love for their country. Both the men and women wear wide trousers and either turbans or wide straw hats to protect them from the hot sun. They usually live in one-room houses. One of the most important objects in every house is an altar at which the people pray to their family ancestors. The people of Annam are poor compared to Americans. They earn their living by farming and fishing, and some of the men and women weave silk. They eat mostly rice and fish. Every summer there are great rainstorms, known as monsoons, which make sailing very dangerous and keep the fishermen at home. There are high mountains in Annam, cut by narrow valleys through which many rivers run.

But these rivers are not very useful because in the summer they dry up, and in the winter they become very swift and dangerous. In ancient times, the people of Annam were ruled by the Chinese, but they finally drove out the Chinese and became independent. Less than a hundred years ago, the French marched in with an army and took control of the country. They made it a French possession (or protectorate), with the capital at Hue. In World War II, the country was invaded and occupied by the Japanese. The people were very dissatisfied, and after the war they overthrew their emperor and proclaimed the independence of the state of Viet Nam. Much disorder and fighting followed, but finally the French recognized the independence of the country in 1946.
