The Bastille was the famous old prison in the city of Paris

, France. It was a solid fortress, with towers, containing seventy or eighty dark cells, and deep, damp dungeons. The fortress was surrounded by a wide ditch called a moat, that was filled with water, and was crossed by a drawbridge. The word "bastille" means any fortress, but it came to mean a particular part of the fortress around Paris, France. Early kings of France stored their treasure there; and later it became a prison.It was originally built in the 14th century to guard one of main entrances to Paris, but by the 18th century the Bastille served only as a prison. People were often imprisoned there for years and years without having committed a crime, without a trial, without much food, and without visitors. Many were there because they were personally disliked by the king of France or his friends. The people of Paris felt that the Bastille represented the injustice and cruelty of the king and his government. On July 14, 1789, crowds gathered outside the great prison crying, "Down with the Bastille!" They stormed the gates, crossed the drawbridge, and after a bloody battle, captured the Bastille, and released the prisoners. This was the beginning of the French Revolution, about which you may read in another article. The Bastille was destroyed shortly after its capture, and a beautiful monument erected in its place. Bastille Day is still celebrated in France, much as the Fourth of July is celebrated in the United States.Bastille Day is the French national holiday which is celebrated on 14 July each year.
