Where Is The Boogeyman Now?

Hospital privacy curtains may give you more than privacy

. In a study presented at an infectious disease conference, scientists swabbed 43 privacy curtains twice a week for 3 weeks. Of the 180 samples that were analyzed, germs were found on 119. Twenty-six percent of the curtains tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and 44% tested positive for a form of Enterococcus - some which were antibiotic-resistant. Of the 13 new curtains that were hung, 12 were contaminated within 1 week. If your doctors or nurses touch the privacy curtain, asking them to wash their hands would be a good "curtain call".

Cell phones give off radiation. In 2011 that radiation hasn't been proven dangerous to humans, but there are simple ways to limit your exposure. Don't sleep with your cell phone on you. Don't carry it close to your body or talk with it close to your face. Because more radiation is emitted from the back of these phones, hold the phone with the keypad facing you. Keep conversations short. During conversations, alternate holding the phone near your left and right ears. Because the radiation gets stronger as the indicated signal gets weaker, use the speakerphone when necessary. If in doubt, use a landline - be "cellibate".

Ultraviolet nail dryers expose hands to the same skin-damaging UV rays that are emitted by tanning beds. Although the UV intensity of nail dryers (four 9-watt bulbs) is much less than that of tanning beds (sixty 200-watt bulbs), exposure is cumulative and could increase the risk of skin cancer over time. Chronic, low-level exposure can cause basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma - the commonest forms of skin cancer. Dr. Roshini Raj, assistant professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, advises women to let their nails dry naturally to avoid being "nailed" by skin cancer.

And ultraviolet rays are more dangerous than previously thought. Experts had thought UVB rays - the ones that cause sunburn - were the main cause of cancer. However, a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology exposed the bottoms of 12 healthy volunteers to both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays primarily damaged the skin's top layers, but UVA rays formed lesions on the skin's deepest layers. Because these lesions are repaired more slowly, there is an increased risk of cancer. Because tanners can't see the lesions, they don't realize damage is being done. Nevertheless, UVA damage is "tan-gible".
