How many movies and television shows make fun of the hapless husband that stubbornly

refuses to stop and ask for driving directions? Men tend to operate as if they have an inner magnet drawing them to their destination. Stopping to consult a map is admitting that they have lost their way.

In the age of the world wide net there is not such thing as "lost". Click, click, click and you can map any destination on the planet. This is a simple process that my kids can execute. It's easy and really cool. There are many great sites so experiment with the top three or four and find the one you like best.

My son and I love the satellite views that actually show a picture of our route. We enter the start and stop locations and the computer does the rest. It provides detailed information. In many instances you can even select a view at ground level that allows you to see the actual buildings and street scene.

I can see at a glance where I turn, names of streets, and names of highways. I can see the distance between each leg of my route. I can see the amount of driving time it will require. I can switch from satellite to just plain old map too.

It shows me the total miles and estimates the amount of time for the journey. Whether I am going across town or across the country I have instructions I can print out and go. Do you have an appointment in the city. No problem when you enter the address of that business as a destination. Enter your address for starting point.

Now talking cars are a literal reality. My brother-in-law has a car that actually tells him where to turn and more. He says it's the perfect safety solution. He keeps both hands on the wheel and listens to the verbal instructions. A glance at his instrument panel can even display a map that moves as his car travels

There are national organizations that will email or mail directions to you. Some are mainly for their membership of retired people. Some are provided by auto road services that you have joined. The point is that there are so many ways to find out how to get there in the best possible time.

A proper set of detailed instructions is great. The only other precaution to take before you hit the road is ongoing highway construction reports. A quick look on the computer and you will be armed with that information or numbers to check for automated updates on your phone. Watch for sign posts along the highway telling you what channel on your radio to tune to for current road information too.

All of these methods are efficient and foolproof. Try it a few times. In this day and age there is really no reason for your spouse to tell you where to go. Now your computer or even your car can tell you how to get where you want to go.
