Austin is an amazing city, but crime is not unheard of here, and you should never let a good deal put you or your familys lives at risk. Ive listed a few areas with median home prices right around the $150 mark where I have friends or clients living. All prices were taken from Zillow.coms median list price data on 12/20/12.

Where To Live In Austin TX East William Canon Area 78744

The East William Canon Area has a median list price of $120,000 and is just 20 minutes (7 miles) south of downtown. Its definitely a bit sparser than other areas but for the money and short transit, it might just be worth it. This area is home to El Meson, my favorite Southeast Austin Mexican restaurant. McKinney Falls State Park and Roy Kizer Golf course are right around the corner.

Where To Live In Austin TX East Round Rock 78664

The East Round Rock median list price is $145,000 and is about a half hour (20 miles) north from downtown, and 15 minutes from the domain. If you dont mind being a bit far from downtown, Round rock is a great place to live. Great schools, great restaurants and youre right next to the Dell Diamond, the home stadium of the Round Rock Express, the AAA minor league baseball affiliate of the Texas Rangers major league baseball team. Pho Viet (Vietnamese food), and la Cocina (Mexican) are two of my favorite restaurants here. Kinningham Park and Clay Madsen Park are right around the corner.

The median list price in this area is $150,000, and is only 5-15 minutes (4 miles from zipcode center) to downtown. This is an up and coming area which has gained much investor interest. Because of its proximity to downtown and cheap living, there are lots of students here Its not uncommon to find an all bills paid shared room or efficiency here for under $500. This area has a few of my favorite asian restaurants in Austin (And Ive traveled all over Asia so this is saying something) 888 Pan Asian (Fusion), Hai Ky (Vietnamese), and Dynasty (Chinese). Riverside Golf Course is right around the corner.

The median list price in this area is $150,000, and is only 5 minutes (2 miles) from the domain and 20 minutes (11 miles) from downtown. The Domain is like a second downtown with lots of brand names stores and lots of good eats and being only two miles away and paying about half the cost of downtown is awesome. My favorite brunch spots are the Kona Grill (Japanese), Steeping Room (coffee, American food), and Tacodeli (Mexican).
