Our reliance on computers is greater today than ever before. We've become acclimatised to being able to simply check email, as opposed to sending letters, and to telephone from anywhere in the world using our cell phones. What we sometimes fail to understand is that each of these electronic devices brings with it a need to find a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of it once it has passed its useful life.

Those companies who receive back part of their manufactured equipment are helping to alleviate the problem. Several international groups of IT persons have banded together in a grass-roots type movement to also aid in the recycling efforts by gathering up older equipment which they solicit from companies and individuals. It may well be past servicing the company well for their needs, but it does have some useful life left.

These individuals are refurbishing the older equipment that has life still in it and offering it to the elderly and underprivileged children. Along the way they teach those groups of people to use the machinery that they have been given. Efforts such as these are certainly laudable, but what about those pieces of electronic or IT equipment which are unable to serve any real useful purpose to these groups?
