COME BACK PEACE
The English Word "PEACE" takes its source from "PAX" a word of Ancient Roman Origin. The Ancient Romans personified PAX' as a goddess. Same goddess was known as PALLAS, the legendary discoverer of OLIVE tree. Since ancient times, the branch of the olive tree has been seen as a symbol of peace-the oil of its fruit, symbol of the HOLY SPIRIT.
What are some of the interpretations of the word peace? According to dictionary makers, peace is explained as:-a state of quiet, calm, silence;
A state of freedom from war, contention, disturbances and hostilities, even fear;
A state of good neighborliness;
A state of happiness and many more.
Take a look at these scenarios which speak about peace.-the innocence and simplicity of a little child;
A beautiful flower garden; the solitude of the forest; the serenity of the moon and the stars at night; the quiet lake and the babbling river; the period of dawn when the noises of the word are at bay.
These and many other scenes quieten the soul and silently speak about peace.
THE STRIFE SITUATION
But why is peace a sought after commodity? Why is everybody talking about peace? What has gone wrong? The whole world seems to be engulfed in strife and conflict. Strife is characterized by war, quarrel, argument, litigation, contention, opposition, crimes etc. all over the world; these are social unrests, civil disobedience, industrial strikes, demonstrations and protests. In several countries war, poverty, disease and squalor have become the order of the day. Brother and sister have lost their sense of belonging, and are at each other's throat spilling blood.
Bad governance practiced by selfish leaders is causing anger, provocation, bitterness and frustration giving rise to rebel and terrorist movements. Fraudsters, armed robbers and economic saboteurs seem to hold us to ransom. Peace has run away; gone far, far away. Like smoke the more we run after it the more it escapes into the thin air. Peace has become a mirage, an illusion, a chasing after the wind, a far-off dream. Peace deals, peace talks, peace agreements become mere paper work often times making a mockery of those who process them. But all is not yet lost. We want peace; we want peace to come back and live with us. Therefore must we prepare to welcome it back into our midst.
STEPS TO PEACE
Now, I should like to propose a few steps that can be taken to restore peace. Peace begins in the family.
The family is gradually disintegrating. Parents are over-engrossed in fruitive, economic activities to the neglect of their children. A new phenomenon of "street children" and other related issues have come into focus. There is too much chasing after vanities and senseless objects things which deceive and promise illusive happiness. It is time to set our priorities right and learn to be moderate in acquisition. We need to control our senses, avoid excesses and lead simple life styles. There are too many things that disturb us physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
On the political front, world leaders have the divine responsibities to practice justice in all its forms. Justices is the axis on which turns the wheel of peace. Peace thrives well in an atmosphere of freedom, equity and righteousness. The law must be seen to work at all levels of society. Certain categories of people must not flout the law and get away with it. The law is meant to keep the people within bounds; to discipline them and generally to restore peace and order.
When justice becomes poison, those who make the poison and those to whom the poison is administered suffer their share of the consequences. Policy makers must be aware and never play games with the ignorance of the masses; for sooner or later, vengeance will raise its hand. Rebel and terrorist movements are ominous signs of crooked political administrations.
Let us examine our dealings with Nature
Make peace with Mother Nature
Many of us may be familiar with an old slogan: if you trouble trouble, trouble will trouble you.
Why this quote? Nature is the source of all life. In nature we live. In nature we have our being. Nature provides abundant supply of air, heat and light; water, food and shelter.
In this scientific and technological age, the same human being who depends on nature for survival is all out to destroy nature:- pollution of the atmosphere and water bodies;
Degradation of the soil and the forests, and other harmful attacks.
The laws of nature are being flouted with impunity; all this is being done for insatiable gain and self aggrandizement. But let us ask ourselves: is nature unmindful of all that we are doing to HER? My answer is "NO!" nature is reacting in diverse ways to what we are doing to Her. See the strange diseases coming from unknown sources; weather vagrancies; floods; wild fires; earthquakes; draughts; famine and many more.
We are reaping what we are sowing into nature. If we want to live in safety; if we want peace and security then we must begin to love and respect nature and live in harmony with HER LAWS.
Religion is being practiced in many ways. Every religion preaches peace but not every religion practices peace. Let all religion show the way of peace not by word but by example. There is need to practice the moral virtues of love, humility, honesty, justice and prudence.
Where there is peace, there is love and unity. Where peace reigns, there is life, long life, even immortality! GIVE PEACE A WELCOME!
