Birth records are one of those things that most of us don't think about very often. We know the date of our birth and we know who our parents are, so we don't give it much thought. Unfortunately, we may need official birth records to get a job or a passport or some such thing. It's often when we go to do these things that we learn that we simply have a copy and we don't have an official birth record. So, where do you go?
A good place to go is to the county that you live in. Most counties have a registrar or an office of vital statistics that you can go to. You can give them your name and the date of your birth and usually your mothers name and you can receive your birth records for a small fee. In most areas this cost is less than $30 but in some areas it is much more.
You can also get online if your city or county is far away or doesn't have an online site of their own. There are dozens of birth records locators to take advantage of online. You may pay slightly more for your birth records this way, but they will usually get them to you quickly and then you will have them forever so it is worth the small fee to have them in your possession. With so many resources to choose from, there is no reason not to have your official birth records.
