NORTH FACING CONSERVATORY

To gain the full benefit of your self-build conservatory all year round, it is worth considering the position of your conservatory, before you buy. North-facing conservatories will be cooler since they receive less direct sunlight than south-facing conservatories and if you do not have heating or insulation you will find it very cold in the winter months.

North-facing conservatories do have several benefits; you'll find them light over the summer months but not as intensely hot as south-facing conservatory. Due to the fact that North facing conservatories do not receive any direct light there is less need for shade such as blinds or shutters.

North-facing conservatories with ventilation, heating and blinds make very good home offices. Artists often prefer north-facing studios due to them having consistent light and constant temperature.

SOUTH FACING CONSERVATORIES

South-facing Self-build conservatories get the sun all year round, making the most of winter sun but because it will gain more heat and retain it longer without adequate ventilation it can become uncomfortable.

In summer a south-facing conservatory will need opening windows and roof vents. Double opening or French doors are sensible additions as they allow air to circulate. You might find it preferable to have a sliding or concertina door that will allow more air to flow into the conservatory.

You will probably need roof blinds or solar reflecting glass and you may also need to consider air-conditioning as southfacing conservatories get very hot.

However, you will be able to enjoy your evenings in a south-facing conservatory when the sun is lower on the horizon or gone down. Some of the daytime heat will be retained making it a perfect place to relax with an evening drink!

EAST FACING CONSERVATORIES

East-facing self build conservatories get the benefit of the early morning sun, which makes them perfect for breakfast rooms or for anybody that likes to make an early start to their day, whether working or just reading the newspapers with a cup of coffee.

Easterly winds can blow cold however, so you may need to heat an east-facing conservatory or ensure that it is adequately insulated to maintain its comfort level. You'll need to choose the type of double-glazing required carefully.

WEST FACING CONSERVATORY

A west-facing conservatory provides good sunlight on bright afternoons and late summer evenings. Similar to south-facing conservatories butthey lessen the effect of theharsh midday sun. West facing conservatories allow you to enjoy thewarmth of long summer night late into the evenings.A west-facing conservatory may need some heating in the morning and ventilation via windows, roof vents and double or sliding doors in the early evening.
