The only way to reach the Tenerife and the other Canary Islands is by air. As you will soon discover when it comes to arranging flights there are a number of low cost airlines provided regular flights to them all. In fact it was the introduction of low cost flights back in the late 1950's and early 1960's that helped to increase the number of visitors to this island.
But unlike the other Canary Islands, Tenerife in fact has two airports. Originally there was only one and then because of the number of visitors to the island had so dramatically increased it was decided to build a second one. This was finally opened in 1977.
The first airport that the island of Tenerife had is on the northern side near La Laguna and is called Los Rodeos. Whilst the second airport is located on the southern side of the island close to Costa del Silencio and just a few miles for the resorts of Las Americas and Los Cristianos. This is known as Reina Sofia (the name of the wife of the King of Spain). So because of its location it means reaching your holiday accommodation has now become a great deal easier. In most cases you will find that it only takes a half hour to reach them.
Both airports are more than able to cope with the number of visitors to the island but on a Friday Reina Sofia is extremely busy indeed. On average there is one flight landing or taking off from this airport every six minutes. Plus as the airport has begun to look a little dated and to help ensure that it can continue to cope with the number of visitors to the island every year much time and money is being spent on improving its appearance.
