The three top blog services are Blogger.com,WordPress.com, and WordPress.org. While it may seem redundant to say WordPress.com and WordPress.org the services are actually different. There are advantages and disadvantages to each system.
Blogger.com Advantages
This service is run by Google and is located at Blogger.com. Since this service is run by Google, the Google search engine favors the blogs, giving them a higher ranking. They also allow you to run Google AdSense on your blog, which can add a little bit of income.
An advantage many people like is, if you choose this option they actually host your blog. This means that you do not have any monthly or annual fees. You are able to have one blog site or multiple. This allows you to discuss different topics on each.
Blogger.com Disadvantages
With Blogger your blog name will look like YourBlogName.Blogspot.com. If this bothers you, you can buy a domain name and set it up with Blogger to use it instead. Blogger is a bit slower loading than other sites. It also has outages that make it hard for you the blogger or the readers to have access to your site.
Since Blogger.com hosts your blog, if feel the material in your blog is inappropriate, for whatever reason, they can delete your blog. They may review your blog if you ask, but there are no guarantees your blog will be returned. You can not make pages which is a great place for an about me, or information your readers may want to read at any time.
WordPress.com Advantages
In this case WordPress.com hosts your blog. There are no monthly or annual fees. You can have multiple blogs. The dashboard includes a stat counter which is a great way to see how much traffic you get.
You can write several posts at once and the posts can be scheduled to release in the future. This option is great for vacations. Create pages for information about you, contact form, or anything you want your readers to have regular access to, outside of your posts.
WordPress.com Disadvantages
Like Blogger, if WordPress.com decides they disagree with your blog, your blog can be deleted. Unlike Blogger you do not have options to add income with advertisements. Also your domain name will be YourBlogSite.WordPress.com.
WordPress.org Advantages
This is hosted on your own domain name at a separate host. Your domain name can be anything you can buy. Since this blog is all yours, you do not have to worry about it being deleted. You can create as many pages as you want covering whatever you like. You can also schedule posts to release later.
While all the formats allow for a few themes, this blog format allows you the greatest amount of choices. You can find free, paid or even custom built themes for your blog. You can also edit the codes in the theme you choose.
Your blog can make money with Google AdSense, advertisements, product reviews or any option you choose. Plugins are mini-programs that can be loaded to add more features to your site. There are now plugins that allow you to turn your blog into a membership website, or add a forum.
WordPress.org Disadvantages
Since you must host the site you will pay monthly or annual hosting fees and pay an annual domain name fee. While installation is not difficult, you may need to hire a programmer to get it installed. You will also need to be responsible for updates, however these are typically push button easy.

Maybe having control is important, which is why I choose WordPress.org and teach my clients the same. Then again free may be really important to you. In the end you are the only one who can decide which features are absolute must haves for you and your blog.
