Which Is Better - A Home In The City Or In The Suburbs?

The key to buying a house, whether you're a seasoned veteran or a first time buyer

, is location. Before deciding where to buy the house, there are several factors to consider. One very important factor is whether you want to buy a property in the city or a home in the suburbs. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, with people swearing by each of them and hating the other. When trying to decide which option is best for you, your spouse and your family, here are a few things to think about.

There are plenty of upsides to life in the city. Dining, shopping, and entertainment are all at your fingertips. If you will be working in the city you're planning on living in, you can save both time and money by walking or riding a moped or bike to work. Depending on the particular city you live in, there are usually plenty of things to do during the day and night. Most cities have plenty of parks that you can enjoy on the weekend and take advantage of public transportation to get there.

There are downsides to living in the city as well. Homes tend not to be homes as many people think of, but flats, or apartment type settings. They tend to be smaller, and expensive for the amount of space. There is crime to deal with, loud noises, and it is often hard to find parking. If you have kids, there is often no yard to play in, and it may be scary letting your children go to the park. Schools are often overcrowded, and there are gangs even in schools. Overall, if you are single, or its just the two of you, living in the city is a good idea, but if you want to have a family, you may want to consider living in the suburbs.

Living in the suburbs or even just beyond the city limits has a number of upsides. First, you will have plenty of space to move around in and will very likely have a yard. The neighborhood will be quiet and you will likely get to know and trust your neighbors. There is usually shopping and entertainment close by and beautiful parks to enjoy. The schools are usually smaller with a better student to teacher ratio and less violence overall. While crime is usually lower, the noise level is also lower.

However, there are downsides to living in the suburbs too. If you work in the city, you will have to think about the commute back and forth each day. Not to mention the hassle of finding a parking place once you arrive. If you are a naturally busy person, you might get a little bored living in the suburbs. You will also have to deal with maintaining your home, mowing the lawn and keeping the yard looking nice. While properties in the suburbs are usually larger than those in the city, it can cost just as much to live in the suburbs as it does to live in the city. You will have to sit down and carefully think about each setting and consider the pros and cons of each in order to decide what is right for you as well as your family.
