Which is the Best Toy Story Movie?

Most people in their twenties will remember being thrilled as a child seeing the

groundbreaking movie Toy Story when it first hit the big screen in 1995. And it wasn't really because Toy Story happened to be the first movie ever to be completely computer animated - though the skill with which Pixar created their masterpiece wasn't lost on young 'uns - but the magic of the story itself, a tale of jealousy and betrayal, of fear and friendship, and of justice, and love. Such themes are rampant in the lives of children, particularly those with siblings who may know all too well just how Woody felt when new and improved Buzz Lightyear landed on the scene. Coupled with a super smart script and funny, loveable characters, Toy Story was a massive success.

A couple of years later, Toy Story 2 introduced the idea of loss and sacrifice, alongside its finer points on heroism, bravery and teamwork. While Toy Story 2 isn't generally as well-remembered as its predecessor, it was distinctive in the way that it took the first film's excitement and apprehension and reproduced them - only bigger. In Toy Story, all that occurred was a brief - albeit adventurous - romp through the neighbourhood as the toys worked together to rescue Woody and Buzz from being lost forever. Toy Story 2, however, expresses emotionally stronger themes, such as loss and abandonment: recall Jessie's heart-wrenching sadness at the moment her owner outgrew her and left her, deserted, in a box on the side of the road. Jessie's reluctance to overcome previous hurt in order to open her heart to the prospect of being loved again struck the hearts of most viewers with its poignancy. These may be toys, but their issues were very, very real.

After many years of all being quiet on Woody's western front, along came Toy Story 3. If the events in Toy Story 2 had in any way improved - or worsened - on the heartstring-tugging plot of the first movie, we hadn't seen anything yet. Toy Story 3 soared to the emotional heights of its predecessors and not only surpassed them, but stomped on them. And ground them underfoot. Toy Story 3 was a film that reduced grown adults to tears, and why wouldn't it? Set in the present day, years after the events of the former films, Toy Story 3 showed a grown up Andy making the decision to let go of his beloved toys as he was leaving for college, abandoning not only Woody and co but his mother - something that undoubtedly struck those parents who became only too aware that the children sitting beside them would one day do the same thing. Oh, and everybody nearly dies.

While it's hard to say which of the Toy Story movies is the greatest, the Toy Story 3 DVD will be out soon so you can check it out and decide for yourself. If you can handle it, that is.
