Which one is better-resume with or without cover letter

While working in my present company, we were hunting for some young talent in colleges, for a 2 month project, it was a summer job. My boss dropped a resume on my desk and asked my opinion about it. It was like any other resume with list of jobs and colleges, and awards. Nothing striking about the resume about which I could make an opinion. The next resume was accompanied with a letter, in which the candidate mentioned his connection with our company. He knew about our company and this was reflected in the letter. We called this candidate for an interview. We get many analyst resumes, executive resumes and manager's resumes and a lot of them are not accompanied with a cover letter. But, a cover letter sure gives a background for us to judge the credentials of a candidate.

A cover letter gives a frame work about the work experience, education and specific skills in short. We need to send a resume with a cover letter.

Creates a background for the interview:

When you write a cover letter, you need to understand the job clearly. The resume tells if you match the qualifications for the job and the cover letter makes the background for the interview.

Personal communication:

A cover letter speaks about your unique strengths and talents; you can project them in your letter. Do not hide behind a dull letter. Use the cover letter to understand you better. It lets you communicate with the employer directly and emphasize your strong points.

Excluded from the resume:

Lot of our positivity does not get represented in the resume. May be you have done some volunteer work that did not fit in the resume because it made it too long. Your cover letter gives you a chance to project to the prospective employer about these extra qualifications. You can also highlight something important part of you that the resume does not accommodate.

Showcases passion:

Take time to research the company, you can show that you have taken extra efforts to know about the company and the job. You can put some reference to the mission, values of the company when you write your cover letter. This shows you are proactive. This shows that you have passion for the job you are applying for and you are interested in the company.

Comprehensive report:

It is like a story board, which tells in an interesting manner how you can contribute and help the organization. It is a problem solution statement from the company's point of view.

Cover letter is an indispensible part of the resume, do not omit it.
