Whitby Cottages And Things To Do When Traveling To Whitby Pier Road, In This Charming North Yorshir

The charming town of Whitby, is located in the North East of England

, in the county of North Yorkshire. The port of Whitby is a natural harbour, and is very well-known for its historical past. It has a lengthy maritime history, indeed, Captain Cook sailed from the town on his fantastic voyages of discovery.

There has been a steep increase in tourism over the previous 30 years. In Victorian times, Whitby was a prominent spa town, and people came from all over the region to partake of the waters, and the clean seaside air. Although this is still the case nowadays, there is more of a demand for pursuits to appeal to a large age range to cater for all preferences.

The town of Whitby still preserves the West Cliff area with its attractive gardens, Captain Cook's Statue and the Whalebone Arch, that is reminiscent of times past. Nevertheless, Pier Road currently has many 'up to date' attractions, which appeal to younger generations.

Pier Road is a vibrant, bustling street, that runs alonside the scenic harbour in the delightful town of Whitby. Along Pier road, and in the narrow streets behind, are several of the Whitby Cottages, available to let.

The amusement parks along Pier Road, have a lot of activities on offer, including slot machines, bingo. small rides and crazy golf, however, they are not too intrusive on the general feel of this historic town. The council has authorized those already running but made a stipulation that they may not increase in number further along the road. This generally seems to strike a happy balance taking into consideration the need for traditional holiday areas together with the exciting bright lights, bingo calling and cuddly toys. Battery Parade, that is situated at the far end of Pier Road, has small fairground rides aimed at younger kids, set up in the summer months.

A popular venue for bands and the Folk Festival dancers and musicans, is the bandstand, at the beginning of the pier. During the summertime, quite a few charitable organisations hold 'fairs', tombolas and book stalls. Opposite to the bandstand there is the Old Whitby Lifeboat Museum and gift shop. Originally constructed in 1895 to house the town's lifeboat, it was decommissioned in 1957 and changed into the museum it is these days. Admission costs nothing although donations are gratefully accepted. The museum houses a large selection of memorabilia, outlining historical rescues in the seas around Whitby, and information about the lifeboat crews involved. On display is the Robert and Ellen Robson old lifeboat built in 1919, that was the final rowing lifeboat in service from 1947 - 1957.

The Whitby Yacht Club licensed premises, is immediately behind the Old Lifeboat Museum. This is a social club for yachting visitors and also local people. This is not the only licenced premises along Pier Road. There are a number of newly opened contemporary drinking establishments as well as the traditional public house.

As one might anticipate, there are a great number of 'fish and chip' cafes and restaurants, in this part of Whitby, offering delectable freshly caught and local fish.. Many folk travel miles to sample the traditional Whitby favourite of 'cod and chips', though nowadays the fayre has increased to include locally caught haddock, plaice and mackerel (when in season). Its not merely the restaurants and cafes that cater to the choices for seafoods. There are stalls along Pier Road which sell crabs, prawns, mussels, winkles, shrimps and roll-mops.

No sea side town could be complete with out a fortune-teller and indeed, at the end of Pier Road there is a well established such lady, that has a white booth on the corner with St. Anne's Staith. She's a clairvoyant and spiritualist by the name of Lee Ester Alita Lee.

Alongside the now recently closed fish market there exists a traditional tea stall, serving welcome bacon sandwiches alongside other such favourites as hot dogs etc. Lastly, but more importantly for the kids, there is a stall selling the all important buckets and spades for the seashore. The stall also sells a wide variety of small toys, and small nets for catching crabs and fish in rock pools.

The constant flow of visitors, walking from the harbour, to the slipway of West Cliff Beach, make sure that Pier Road is a vibrant and busy area of the town. On Regatta Monday, Pier Road is closed to traffic to enable the 'fair to come to town'. From the bandstand to the end of the West Pier, fairground rides are erected, and the rest of pier road is crowded with stalls selling a range of diverse goods from towels, to cuddly toys to balloons. The transformation is unbelievable for the just one day of the year. The following day the road is returned to normality and is 'business as usual'.
