Whitby Hotels, The Change In Expectation, Quality And Choice Over The Last Century

The North Yorkshire coastal town of Whitby set in a natural harbour between the counties

of Cleveland and Lincolnshire, has historical links with visitors from a bygone age alongside present and potential visitors of the future.

Due to its location, it is particularly popular with visitors from the immediate area such as Cleveland, Northumberland and the East and West Ridings of Yorkshire. In the last twenty to thirty years, however, the areas for potential visitors has increased to encompass England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and, in fact, the rest of the world.

With the ever increasing popularity of the town, the number of providers of accommodation has increased.The hotel sector, in particular, has been quick to realise the potential income from the vast numbers of people not only staying for a break-away but also for their annual summer holiday. With the advent of more and more special' events on the yearly calendar, the potential for a large number of visitors at any given time of the year is steadily increasing

The Festive Season in latter years has seen an increase in the number of hotels and restaurants offering accommodation and special menus to meet the demand. The advent of the Gothic Weekends and other events during the spring and autumn have seen numbers swell to quite often full capacity across the board from the smallest of b & bs to the guest houses, hotels and self catering accommodation.

Many of the larger buildings of the George Hudson era on the Royal Crescent and West Cliff area' have been converted to hotels and due to their size have the capacity to adapt to the now essential en-suite accommodation. Incredibly in todays standards it would be unheard of to have water jugs and bowls in the bedrooms with a shared water closet on each floor. In the not too distant past, probably towards the end of the last century, washbasins in the rooms and the sharing of a number of toilets and bathrooms in each establishment were the norm. The twenty-first century, however, has seen the boundaries pushed even higher with full en-suite facilities a basic essential.

As more hotels are added to the increasing list available, so too has the high levels of expectation increased with regard to services, dcor and menu choices. An increase has been visible in the number of various types of hotels offering 'themed accommodation'. A rise in four poster beds, rooms encompassing the Victorian style, Gothic style, Scottish style, boudoir style and ultra modern have offered the potential visitor a plethora of accommodation to be viewed on the internet or by the brochures offered by the Tourist Accommodation Board.

The English Tourist Board have certain criteria and standards across the board for the whole of England and this is reflected in the number of stars credited to each particular establishment. The higher the number of stars awarded to each particular establishment, the higher the level of services and accommodation provided.

Not all of the hotels are situated on the West Cliff or in that vicinity. A few are situated in and around the town centre and a few are just slightly out of town but still easily accessible. Included in these are one or two higher bracket establishments dating from bygone ages and there is a project underway for a very exclusive hotel just out of town to cater for the higher earning bracket of potential visitor. Extravagant perhaps but at least there is a choice across a full range of tariffs on offer.

Whitby can boast that in relation to its size it is well able to offer a full range of accommodation and hotel choice available to welcome visitors into the twenty-first century.
