When the blood pressure reading was taken in home it is somewhere between normal and slightly high. But when it is taken at doctor's clinic it reads very high. One of my client was saying about the difference in her spouse's blood pressure reading.
By seeing the doctor her husband's blood pressure was raising. My client wondered this way. But her husband thought he was not very much nervous by seeing the doctor. But he did admit that he could been subconsciously affected.
This is called "White coat syndrome" or "White coat hypertension"
A person's blood pressure may be raised in either a doctor's office or even an office setting. However it reads normal at home. It may affect 10 to 20 percent of the adult population.
At time the nurses and other medical professionals make take incorrect reading. This mainly happens due to using a blood pressure cuff that is very small and that results in a high blood pressure read.
The risk may be smaller than chronic high blood pressure, but it is larger than normal. Now the question that needed an answer is Is this syndrome pose a health risk? And the answer is yes.
It is not an issue when the blood pressure increases only when visiting doctors clinic and only for a few minutes. But if a person experience this problem many times a day then it may lead to chronic high blood pressure. The very important thing that everybody should know when is the blood pressure increasing and how long each time it tend to happens.
People sometimes just assume that they are suffering from White Coat syndrome when they in fact are not.
This is not surprising, given the fact that most of us would prefer that we suffer from an annoying condition, rather than a serious health risk like chronic hypertension.
