The town of Whitefield which is located approximately 24 kilometers away from Bangalore is visited by crowds of locals and tourists mainly because it is home to the serene Whitefield Ashram. The Whitefield Ashram was inaugurated on the 25th of June in 1960 by none other than Sri Sathya Sai Baba himself. Every year during the summer season which is usually from March to May, Sai Baba resides in the Ashram. During his stay here, he generally holds talks that last throughout the day and meets people personally. Even when he is not there, various types of religious ceremonies and rituals are performed during the day. The summer abode of Sai Baba in the Ashram's premises is known as the Trayee Brindavan. Shaped like a lotus flower, this lovely yellow and pink building was inaugurated by Sai Baba in 1984.
Three other significant buildings apart from the Trayee Brindavan make up the Whitefield Ashram. The worship hall where prayers and other religious activities are carried out is known as the Sai Ramesh Krishnan Hall. The school of higher learning that is found onsite is located in the edifice titled the Brindavan Campus. A hostel for students attending this school lies adjacent to the worship hall. In 1999, the Sai Krishnan Kalyana Mandapam building was launched. This structure houses an auditorium where important conferences and cultural events are held.
