The only real side effect may be tooth sensitivity, which can last from a few hours to a few days.

The other possibility is at-home bleaching trays that you purchase from your dentist. Like many over-the-counter bleaching kits, an at-home treatment involves using trays. You spread the bleaching solution into the trays and simply hold them on your teeth for the required amount of time. Since these trays are custom made in your dentist's office, however, you'll find they do a better job because they are formed to the shape of your teeth, and therefore get into the small areas that standard trays often miss.

The Last Resort - Veneers

The most expensive and invasive procedure for a whiter, brighter smile is veneers. These custom made shells are applied over your existing teeth. Made with resin, they can last up to twenty years and will solve the problem of misshaped or damaged teeth. However, these are considerably more expensive and the structure of your natural teeth is altered because the installation of veneers involves removing material by drilling and shaping.

Tooth whitening is an excellent way to look younger and healthier and to improve your looks, but it does take some research and care on your part. Keep in mind that the process will have to be repeated, but if you avoid the foods, beverages, and habits that stain your teeth, you can prolong the need for your next treatment considerably.
