Whitewater Rafting In Lansing, West Virginia.

I've always thought it would be a great experience to go white water rafting but

had always put it off because I couldn't get enough people to go with me. So a few years ago I decided I would do whatever I had to do to get some friends together and take a trip down to West Virginia.

I was able to get five of us to agree on a time and location. We chose the New River in West Virginia based on the quality of rapids and the fact that it was only about an 8 hour drive from where we lived. We chose a company called "Class VI" river runners out of Lansing, West Virginia. They were top notch all the way. Great facilities, excellent staff and first class equipment. We took a two day/overnight trip so that we could get more time in on the river and experience more of what it had to offer.

Along for the trip was my cousin, two of my best friends and a cousin of one of those friends. The first day was great. We arrived in Lansing, West Virginia the night before so that we didn't have to leave too early in the morning. When we arrived at the companies location we were surprised at how nice it was. It was very scenic as we were in the mountains, and the grounds were like a big ski cabin. They had gift shops and places to eat, grill out and cabins to rent if that was what you wanted to do. They offered photographs of the trip and videos if chosen. Before we left for the first part of the trip they walked us through everything to expect and of course had us sign a release of liability waiver. Yeah, things happen. The rapids do get strong and accidents do happen. Don't worry too much though, every precaution is taken to ensure you have a fun but safe trip.

After the safety walk through we loaded our gear and raft onto the trailer behind our bus and headed 26 miles or so upstream. After unloading our gear and raft and after a few more safety reminders we all loaded up into rubber inflatable kayak. I think we traveled about five miles downstream on those. It was a blast! It doesn't take more than a class two or three rapid to really get your heart racing in one of those. They really aren't too hard to learn how to control either. The scenery was just gorgeous. Really peaceful and calming. Taking a trip like this is a great way to relax and relieve some stress. Now this was a two day trip so that meant we would have a lunch and dinner provided the first day and breakfast and lunch the second day. You might think that pulling out of the river and having a lunch or dinner by on the banks wouldn't be all that great but it was actually very good. They went all out on every meal.

We stopped had lunch and then continued on for a few more hours. We all piled into the huge raft, not sure how many people it held but I think it was 12 or so. We had our group of five plus three guides. That first day they worked us pretty good, thanks to a couple friends who were being a little too cocky! Thankfully I was on the back of the raft and I really dug my legs under the raft so I wouldn't go flying out. Unfortunately for one of my cocky buddies he wasn't as lucky. He was upfront and they spun us around after a drop over an 8' or 10' waterfall and stuck him right under it! Needless to say he went for a swim!

We set up camp that night and had a great dinner and great conversation. It was really, really quiet. Other than the water running by next to our tents. The following day was much of the same except we hit some really big rapids. We hit a bunch of fours and a couple of fives. You want to talk about getting the juice flowing! I think we did about 12 miles or so that second day. We had a nice breakfast, a really nice lunch and after we finished headed back to base.

I can't say enough about the staff, the guides and the facilities of Class-Vi. I will provide their number and site so if you are interested in a great trip like this you can research all the different options they provide. I've been on another rafting trip since then in Colorado. Although the scenery was amazing the trip wasn't anywhere near as exciting and the facilities were lacking in comparison.

This is a great trip for people of most ages, check their website for more details. If you're looking for a great vacation that will create lasting memories for you and your family or friends, don't hesitate to travel to Lansing, West Virginia and look up this fine company!
