A recent Sports News headline read, "Nordegren Signs Contract Extension with Tiger Woods."
The article, speaking as if this were a sports team, states that Elin Nordegren, the wife of Tiger Woods the golf pro, "has agreed to a contract extension to remain married to Woods for at least the next two seasons." The article further discusses that she and Tiger Woods have restructured their prenuptial agreement; she will receive $5 million as a "bonus" and another $55 million if she remains a "dutiful wife."
Supposedly, this came about when Tiger Woods publicly acknowledged that he had been unfaithful to his wife of five years. Already in the public spotlight, the media went into overtime, feeding the frenzy for an insatiable public desire to know everything about this couple's private life. Like moths to a light, our vicarious nature is drawn.
Team Statistics
If we change the context and view Elin and Tiger just as a couple trying to deal with their world and their relationship, we can learn something valuable about relationship, love and money.
Elin Nordegren was born in Sweden to a mother who was a Swedish policy minister and a father who was a radio journalist. They divorced when she was six years old.
Elin worked at odd summer jobs to finance her education and began modeling in 2000. In 2001, while working as a nanny, she met Tiger Woods. She was 21 years old.
"Tiger" (Eldrick Tont) Woods was born in California. His father is a retired U.S. Army officer and his mother cared for him at home. Tiger was a child prodigy, beginning to play golf at age two. His ability grew quickly and he won multiple junior championships and then became the world's highest paid athlete having won fourteen major golf championships.
Elin and Tiger were married in 2004, she was 24 and he was 29 years old. They have a two year old daughter and a son who is less than a year old.
In the rough
A good golf player plays a golf course's Professional Average Result, called par. If a player misses shots and strays off the green he is likely to be over par and can lose the game. Couples, acting as a team, support one another to their mutual success. Tiger and Elin are not acting as a team and on the golf course of life they are in the rough.
Any of us that have been married or in a committed relationship for more than 10 years know that having a successful relationship is part commitment and part on-the-job training. Even a couple who is not in the public eye experiences challenges as they adapt to one another and learn to work together.
Player styles
Unless you are part of Tiger and Elin's family, you cannot know what they or their lives are like. But when we suspend judgment, we can draw inferences from what we know about this couple and about relationships, families, business and wealth.
Having rarely seen Elin Nordegren speak in public, it is difficult to observe her communication style.
In public, Tiger Woods has an introvert personality. Introverts tend to process inside and keep their feelings to themselves. It is probably no accident that he excels at golf. It is an intensely individual sport that requires deep focus and concentration from within. While Tiger may appreciate the money that comes from his success, he pays a price for all the public attention he receives. Dealing with large numbers of people drains an introvert of energy and increases their need for time alone.
Money
Most of us say we want to be rich. Being wealthy is a wonderful thing. It not only gives you many more options, but it can give you an immense sense of security. Having a lot of money is good for us in another way too, to successfully manage and grow your wealth requires you to develop new knowledge and skills as well as learn to operate in a bigger arena in life.
However, not everyone has the experience to successfully manage large sums of money. People who suddenly come into a large amount of money, as in winning the lottery, lose control of that money in a relatively short time. Additionally, when a person who is not wealthy marries someone who is, there is not only a disparity in power but issues of trust and control surface. Love can come second here.
Team Relations
Just because Tiger Woods is a great golfer does not mean that he is good with relationships. Outstanding athletes receive prestige, adoration, attention, money and opportunity. It can make it easier to fall prey to clandestine affairs. But lust is not love. Seeking attention and affection from others can be a search for love, but it is like using a shovel to play golf. No skill is required.
Elin Woods's ability to build and maintain a healthy relationship is unknown, but we do know that neither of them was previously married and that within five years of marriage their relationship is in trouble.
Having children early in a marriage can be a mixed blessing. Mostly, starting a family brings couples closer together. However, the demands of pregnancy and the needs of the children require a large commitment of time and can pull attention away from each another and their relationship.
A long lasting, effective, rewarding and happy relationship does not happen by accident. People make relationships work. Long lasting and highly effective relationships happen where couples agree on their purposes, goals, values and the code by which they will live. And where both parties feel safe to disagree and express that disagreement to one another.
Who did Tiger Cheat?
Tiger cheated his wife and his children by risking the loss of his beautiful family.
Tiger cheated his wife and him out of an opportunity to work out their differences and needs in a manner that would serve them for years to come.
Tiger cheated himself of an opportunity to be in alignment with his own beliefs. Tiger practices Buddhism, one of the tenants of which is a state of enlightenment attained by divorcing oneself from worldly desires.
Tiger cheated those that look up to him as a role model, including his family.
Lessons for the fans
Every day someone we seem to hear of politicians, business leaders, sports figures, people in entertainment and others that break trust. Once broken, trust is very difficult to earn back.
We can only hope that Tiger and Elin will seek counseling and successfully put this past them for the sake of their children and their own futures. Being in the public spotlight can bring lots of pressure on a couple, but they have to see past this and define what they stand for as a couple and a family. It is important that they establish a clear purpose for their relationship and learn to effectively build love, trust and fulfillment through and with one another.
The rest of us can help by ensuring that our relationships are solid and by not being a part of living vicariously. The more we refuse to believe and participate in rumor the more we can help others be successful.
