Lead.

Aluminum

Nearly all the water treatment plants use chlorine or chloramine as part of the disinfection process in the water to kill harmful bacteria. Once in the water, these react with natural organic substances and produce disinfection byproducts. The most common ones are trihalomethanes (THM) and Haloacetic acids (HAA).
Trihalomethanes are known carcinogens; in fact, they are classed as cancer Group B. This indicates that they have been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
DBPs have also been shown to cause reproductive problems in both humans and animals. Recent research carried out indicates that drinking chlorine treated water will double your risk of bladder and rectal cancers.
Recent studies also indicate that these DBPs are extremely toxic even more so than chlorine.
Cysts.
Bacteria always have been a major problem in our water supply. This is the reason chlorine was added to our water supply in the first place. There have been several major outbreaks of waterborne disease over the past two decades or so. The main culprit has been Cryptosporidium; this bacterium is fatal to the young and elderly as demonstrated by the Milwaukee outbreak. It is also one other last things that are suspected when people start falling seriously ill for no apparent reason.
The only way to remove these is with a really good water filtration unit. However, you need to do your homework is not all water filters remove cysts. You need to get hold of the certified performance data sheet. This this will give you all the information you need about that particular model. The cheaper models are not really worth the money as they do not remove all the contamination. You should also check out the cartridges. Some are quite expensive but have limited capacity.
