Who Should I Invite To A Bridal Shower?

There is so much to do when planning a wedding

. There are caterers and musicians to hire, cakes to taste, venues to find, and dresses to try on. The bridal shower is one party the bride doesn't have to plan for at all and can be a fun respite from her wedding responsibilities. If you're planning a shower for someone you care about, you might have some questions about etiquette and who to invite.

Who do I invite?

The bride is, of course, the guest of honor. You'll want to tailor everything, including the guest list to her liking. The mothers of the bride and groom should all be invited. This includes step-mothers and other mother figures in the couple's lives. Grandparents , sisters, and female friends can be invited. Don't however invite someone to the shower who is not invited to the wedding, as that is considered very rude. If you are having a destination wedding or have invited guests that live far away, it is alright to send them bridal shower invitations, even if you think they won't be able to attend, as long as they are also invited to the wedding. It shows them they are important to the bridal couple. Even when there are awkward combinations of guests, both a current and former wife, for example, it is always best to invite everyone you want to attend. This allows them to make the decision of whether or not to attend. It is better for a guest to turn down an invitation than to not be invited at all.

It is becoming more common for bridal showers to be co-ed. Sometimes this means that both male and female friends and family of the bride may be invited. Other times, both the bride and groom are present to receive gifts and male friends and relatives may or may not be invited.

When is the shower?

Plan for the shower to occur one to two months before the party so that it doesn't occur during the crunch time before the wedding. Send out invitations four to six weeks before the shower date. Send out one invitation per adult guest. If inviting more than one person in a household, send out individual invitations to each of them, unless inviting a child sixteen years or younger. Hand-address the invitations. Include address and phone number for RSVP.

Where do I put the registry information?

Unlike in the wedding invitation, you may include bridal registry information here. Include an invitation insert with your registries and any wedding websites or blogs that you have put together.

Who pays for a bridal shower?

The maid of honor or the bridal party usually pays for the bridal shower. Occasionally, if no one else is available to fulfill that requirement, the family of the bride may step in and pay for it. The bride herself should never be responsible for either payment or planning of the shower. Keep your financial responsibility in mind when planning whom to invite. Not everyone who is invited to the wedding needs to be invited to the shower. Many guests will either send their gifts in advance, or in some cases they will bring them to the wedding. Keep the invitation small enough that you can afford to give the bride a party worthy of her attendance.
