Banksy: Art Terrorist

If there is one artist that has captured the hearts and minds of a young generation then it's Banksy. His name is more a pseudonym as the identity of the artist still remains a tightly guarded secret. You can normally find his works of art on the sides of roads, under bridges, making headline news around the world.

Beginnings

Coming from the Bristol underground scene Banksy practiced his dark arts on the graffiti scene during the aerosol boom of the 80's . It is rumoured that he found his style while he was hiding behind a car from the police, he noticed a stenciled number plate which gave him the idea for his style, thus allowing him to complete his pieces quicker.

Humor

Known for his sense of humor and anti establishment slogans which often feature rats, police, the elderly, or soldiers, Banksys work is always guaranteed to grab the headlines.

In one iconic image taken from Quentin Tarantinos Pulp Fiction, the two main characters of John Travolta and Samuel. L. Jackson were seen clutching bananas instead of guns but Transport for London were not happy with this stating, "our staff are Professional Cleaners, not Professional Art Critics", Banksy hit the same site again this time depicting the two characters dressed in banana costumes.

Spoof 10 pound notes showing pictures of Diana, Princess of Wales, instead of the Queen of England were thrown into the crowd at the Notting Hill Carnival, lucky punters who managed to grab a few will be pleased to note that one sold for 2000GBP on Ebay recently.

Political

As a political activist Banksy recently put his art to work on Israels controversial West Bank wall to highlight his contempt for a wall that will stand three times higher than the Berlin wall and is designed to suppress the Palestininans.

As well as making his own film which appeared at the Sundance film festival he has also made an opening credit of the Simpsons, depicting children working in deplorable conditions and featuring banksy motifs.
