Who Wants Any Negative Emotion? But It Is Necessary For A Longer Life
Imagine a mouse with no fear
Imagine a mouse with no fear. How long do you think he would live walking out in front of a cat? How would anyone learn socially acceptable behavior if one could feel no guilt? There are countless things that lead to negative feelings and increase our chances of having a longer and healthier life.
Physical pain leads to negative emotions. How many times have you or someone you know wished to never experience physical pain? Interestingly, there are people born with no ability to feel pain from their skin. They can feel no pain from cuts or burns. Unfortunately, due to infections they tend to die much younger than most of us for that very thing many would consider a blessing.
I mention these things due to the fact that our society seems to have evolved with a mentality that somehow negative emotions are unacceptable and signify the presence of a psychological abnormality. In this day of fast foods and immediate gratification, people way too often feel cheated if they have feelings of depression.
A healthier view of
negative emotion could lead to less distress and anxiety. For example, people will typically develop symptoms of a major depressive episode when they lose important relationships in their lives. If it is accepted as normal and it is anticipated that, over many months, there will be a lessening of the depression, the person feels much less anxious. In other words, accepting ones feelings as normal creates less distress.
The role of positive and
negative emotion in determining relationship behaviors is also something that affects us. In fact, a new theory of brain functioning has led to the proposal that people have one of two behavior patterns. These have been called Type-T (Taker) and Type-G (Giver) patterns. In this case, takers have negative feelings when they have to give, while givers have negative feelings when they have to take.
Since all people desire a positive emotion and no one wants a
negative emotion, this leads to predictable behavior patterns. As one understands the patterns, it becomes possible to alter ones own interaction style and improve the quality of many relationships. Initially, the other person may have more negative feelings, but over time this can result in their altering their own behavior in healthier ways.
